Exploring emerging AI practices in academic research and higher education

May 2026
United Seas Information Inc. (USI) has launched AI for Academic Excellence, an interdisciplinary initiative examining how AI is beginning to influence academic research practices.
As large language models become more widely used in academic settings, their role is extending beyond efficiency and administrative support. AI tools are increasingly involved in literature review, academic writing, research planning, and the early development of research ideas.
AI is beginning to influence not only how research is written, but also how it is developed and organized.
At the same time, universities and researchers continue to face important questions surrounding authorship, originality, academic integrity, and the appropriate use of AI in scholarly work. While AI adoption across higher education is accelerating, many academic practices and standards are still adapting to these changes.
Current Focus
The initiative examines how research practices may continue to evolve as AI tools become more common in research environments.
Current discussions focus on several closely related areas, including:
evolving research and writing practices
AI-assisted literature synthesis
changing expectations around collaboration and scholarly standards
the relationship between AI tools and research development
Many questions surrounding AI in research remain methodologically and academically unresolved.
Rather than approaching AI solely as a productivity tool, the initiative also considers how academic work itself may change as AI becomes more embedded in research processes and scholarly environments.
Ongoing Collaboration
AI for Academic Excellence brings together scholars working across AI, research methodology, and higher education. The initiative is intended as an ongoing collaborative effort centred on observation, discussion, and practical exploration.
The initiative is designed as an academic exploration rather than a fixed institutional position.
Through this work, USI hopes to contribute to more academically grounded discussions about the future role of AI in research and higher education.
